He is so good at using simple metaphors to explain complex ideas, and I loved this last little bit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke famously stated that a sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. But that is only true if that technology is not explained well enough. It is the responsibility of technologists to make sure their offerings are not taken as magic.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>At the moment, OpenAI appears to be content with offerings that <em>are <\/em>taken as magic. Magic is exciting. Magic creates drama. Magic <a href=\"https:\/\/thenewstack.io\/making-sense-of-sam-altmans-7-trillion-ai-chips-gambit\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thenewstack.io\/making-sense-of-sam-altmans-7-trillion-ai-chips-gambit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generates investment<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I really want to trust Sam Altman, his board, and the optimistic engineering team at OpenAI. Altman comes across as a natural-born CEO\u2014confident, purposeful and thoughtful, albeit with a fair dose of tech-bro. But he is no scientist which, given the stakes, makes me uneasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lex Fridman&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/jvqFAi7vkBc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">newest interview<\/a> is worth watching (as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/L_Guz73e6fw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first interview<\/a>). I&#8217;m a little encouraged by this exchange (the potential for catastrophic <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Instrumental_convergence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">instrumental convergence<\/a> notwithstanding): <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Lex Fridman<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=jvqFAi7vkBc&amp;t=5702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(01:35:02)<\/a> There could be major theatrical moments, also. What to you would be an impressive thing AGI would do? You are alone in a room with the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sam Altman<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=jvqFAi7vkBc&amp;t=5716\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=jvqFAi7vkBc&amp;t=5716\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(01:35:16)<\/a>\u00a0This is personally important to me. I don\u2019t know if this is the right definition. I think when a system can significantly increase the rate of scientific discovery in the world, that\u2019s a huge deal.
